Joel Fountain – Drummer/Singer/Songwriter/Producer
Joel Fountain currently resides in Nelson BC, Canada, and is an Instructor at Selkirk College in the Contemporary Music & Technology program.
Prior to becoming a Instructor, Joel performed on a regular basis at clubs, concert halls, recording studios, convention centers, bars, hotels, and casinos in Vancouver and around the world. Some career highlights include; Performing in Russia with trumpet virtuoso & ‘Order of Canada’ recipient Jens Lindemann; performing concerts with Canadian Jazz sensation Laila Biali (including an Australia tour); touring the world with jazz trumpet legend Maynard Ferguson as part of his ‘Big Bop Nouveau band’ (including concerts with Diane Schuur & Slide Hampton); playing in the Grammy nominated jazz big band the “One O’clock Lab band” (including concerts with The Brecker Brothers, Terry Gibbs, Byron Stripling, and Tom ‘bones’ Malone).
Joel has produced and recorded multiple albums, including producing Juno nominated Adam Robert Thomas’s 2018 self-titled solo album. In 2011 Joel released his own solo album entitled “Lindsays’s Song” of all original music where he played drums, keyboards, and sang. Joel is regularly featured as a sideman on multiple ‘indie’ recordings every year, and when not recording in the studio he performs locally with many great Canadian musicians including Bruno Hubert, Brad Turner, Miles Black, Chris Gestrin, Jodi Proznik, Kristian Alexandrov, Dee Daniels, and Grammy winning children’s entertainer Jennifer Gasoi, to name just a few.
Joel earned his bachelors degree in music from the University of North Texas (magna cum laude in jazz arranging), and whilst studying in Texas he had the opportunity to perform concerts with Rufus Reid, John Abercrombie, Kenny Wheeler, Byron Stripling, Mike Stern, Jim Snidero, plus many great Texas musicians including John Adams, Rodney Booth, Shelley Carrol, Dan Haerle, Noel Johnston, and more. Joel studied drum set with Ed Soph for 4 years, and also with Canadian drum teacher Don Reid for 3 years. Joel has played on many full length CD’s, including releases on Nagelheyer records (the Lynn Seaton trio), Summit records (the Steve Anderson trio), “Lab 2001” with the One O’clock Lab band, and also his own modern jazz album “Saturn Return” on SiTMoM records. SiTMoM records was founded in 2005 by Joel, and featured Grammy winning band Snarky Puppy, plus many other incredible Texas based bands.
